DC Greens strongly opposes the Bowser Administration’s proposal to eliminate all funding and staff for the Food Policy Council (FPC) and the Office of the Food Policy Director (OFPD).

Just over 10 years ago, our organization proudly partnered with DC Central Kitchen, Councilmember Mary Cheh, and others to co-author the legislation that established the DC Food Policy Council. We believed then and believe now that food policy is health policy, and that the District is stronger when it has dedicated, centralized leadership focused on building an equitable, healthy, and sustainable food system.

In less than a decade, the FPC has become indispensable to D.C.’s health equity infrastructure. The FPC and OFPD have aligned agencies and community partners, strengthened the food assistance ecosystem, and provided steady coordination during moments of crisis, including the COVID‑19 pandemic. Dismantling this key infrastructure undermines hard‑won progress for our city and it weakens our collective ability to respond.

The District can do better.

We urge the DC Council to restore funding for the FPC and OFPD.
