How To Plant Onions
Ready to get planting? Here are some tips to get you started. First, make sure to choose a sunny spot so they get lots of light. Also, you’ll want to keep the soil well-drained, so try to find a planting spot that has good drainage, like a slope or higher ground. And of course, water them regularly.
When To Harvest
Onions are ready to harvest when the neck of the onion flops over, the leaves turn brown, and the onion stops growing.
- Neck flops over: The neck of the onion is where the leaves meet the bulb. When the neck flops over, it’s no longer receiving nutrients from the plant and is ready to cure.
- Leaves turn brown: The leaves of the onion will turn brown and have a papery consistency.
- Onion stops growing: The onion will stop growing and the stalks will start to fall over.
Onions grown from seed typically take 90–100 days to mature, while onions grown from sets are usually ready to harvest after about 80 days.
