Meet the Bees: Pollinators & Urban Food Systems
Pollinators don’t just share our gardens — they sustain our food supply!
Discover the vital connection between pollinators and our local food system in this hands-on urban agriculture experience. Participants will get an up-close look at a live observation hive, examining pollen baskets and worker bee activity, then take a guided garden walk to identify pollinator-friendly plants currently in bloom. The session also explores pollinator food webs and seasonal foraging patterns, highlighting how native plants and insects work together to sustain our communities.
To wrap things up, participants take part in a Pollinator Scavenger Hunt — searching the garden for native flowers, buzzing insects, and signs of pollination using a field guide sheet.
This class is free and open to ages 8+. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration is required.
About the Facilitator
This class will be led by Moe the Beekeper of Diaspora Honey. Diaspora Honey is a Black-owned, veteran-led urban beekeeping and sustainability studio based in Temple Hills, MD. There will be live bees during the workshop, and they will be visible through a protective structure where only Diaspora Honey staff will enter.
