Meet the Bees: Inside the Observation Hive
Come meet the bees!
Get an intimate introduction to the world of honeybees through a real, live observation hive in this beginner-friendly session. Participants will handle actual wooden frames and beekeeping tools, then use magnifying glasses to spot the queen, drones, and workers up close while learning about each bee’s role within the colony. Interactive visuals — including bee castes charts and anatomy posters — bring the science to life in an engaging, accessible way.
The session wraps up with “Bee ID Bingo,” a garden activity where participants match live bee behaviors and hive parts to visuals on a bingo-style card, from spotting capped honey to catching a waggle dance in action.
This class is free and open to ages 8+. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration is required.
About the Facilitator
This class will be led by Moe the Beekeper of Diaspora Honey. Diaspora Honey is a Black-owned, veteran-led urban beekeeping and sustainability studio based in Temple Hills, MD. They manage healthy honey bee colonies around the D.C. metro area, bottle raw hyper-local honey, and turn every hive into a curiosity‑lab that connects communities to pollinators, food systems, and land stewardship. There will be live bees during the workshop, and they will be visible through a protective structure where only Diaspora Honey staff will enter.
