DC Greens has been recognized with a 2026 District Sustainability Award for its community-led approach to advancing both food access and environmental sustainability in Washington, D.C. The honor highlights the organization’s work at The Well at Oxon Run, a Ward 8 community farm and wellness space where residents are shaping solutions to build up their local food system.
“This award reflects DC Greens’ commitment to building sustainability into our work across the food system, from agriculture and health equity to food policy, with a focus on practical solutions that meet community needs,” says Charles Rominiyi, The Well at Oxon Run Manager for DC Greens. “We are honored to be recognized alongside so many organizations working to create a more sustainable D.C.”
At The Well, DC Greens partners with Ward 8 residents to design and lead programs that increase access to fresh, healthy food while strengthening environmental stewardship. This community-driven model comes to life through a range of interconnected practices. The Well’s farm grows fresh produce using regenerative techniques such as drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and cover cropping. The community composting cooperative diverts organic waste from landfills and returns nutrients to the soil, creating a closed-loop system. Through its Community Leadership Initiative, residents with lived expertise serve as ambassadors, helping guide programming, build local capacity, and support the growth of a neighborhood-based green workforce. Together, these efforts support both climate resilience and increased access to healthy food for Ward 8 residents.
The District Sustainability Awards, presented by the DC Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE), recognize organizations, businesses, and individuals whose work contributes to a greener, healthier, and more livable city. DC Greens was selected for demonstrating an approach that is both locally rooted and scalable, showing that community-led solutions can drive measurable environmental and public health outcomes.
DC Greens joins a group of 2026 award recipients advancing sustainability across the District, from clean energy innovation to waste reduction and sustainable design. As part of the award, DC Greens will be featured in a DOEE case study, helping to share its model and expand the reach of community-driven approaches to sustainability.
