As we enter the final month of The Well’s 2026 season, I’d like to invite you to visit us before the season ends on October 31.
Many people think of The Well at Oxon Run as an urban farm, and it is certainly that. Throughout the season, we grow and distribute thousands of pounds of fresh produce and compost thousands more. The Well is home to a remarkable variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Each time I walk through it, I am struck by the quantity and variety of food being grown there and by the knowledge that it will soon find its way onto dinner tables in Ward 8 and throughout the District.
But The Well is so much more than a farm. It is an intergenerational gathering space, a place of joy and contemplation. Especially on Wellness Market Days, you’ll find neighbors stopping by, children playing in the garden, volunteers working side by side with old friends and new, and community members attending Food Is Medicine, educational, and cultural programming. People come for so many reasons, but they often leave with something similar: a deeper connection to one another and to the place itself, or inspiration to continue their personal wellness journeys.

Recently, Greater Greater Washington published an article about Oxon Run Park, the largest green space in the DC Department of Parks and Recreation’s inventory. While the article is not focused specifically on The Well, it highlights the fascinating history about Oxon Run Park and the many people who have worked to preserve and strengthen it over the years.
As Ab Jordan, a longtime friend and partner of DC Greens, put it, Oxon Run Park is “a jewel in Ward 8 that needs to be utilized and protected.”
He’s exactly right.
Places where people can gather, learn, volunteer, celebrate, and simply spend time together matter enormously. Public spaces do not become vibrant on their own. They are brought to life by residents, community organizations, volunteers, and countless others who invest their time and energy into them. DC Greens is proud to be one part of that broader effort.
Alongside many partners and community members, we are helping make Oxon Run a place where people can grow food, improve their health, build relationships, and experience the simple joy of being outdoors together. The Well is fortunate to sit among wonderful communities, including Congress Heights, Bellevue, Washington Highlands, and other nearby neighborhoods. It is also a destination for visitors from other parts of Ward 8 and across the District. One of the things I appreciate most about spending time there is seeing people from different neighborhoods, generations, and backgrounds come together in a shared space.

On any given visit, you might learn about beekeeping, mushroom cultivation, composting, Food Is Medicine, or urban agriculture. There is always something new to discover, even for those of us who spend a lot of time there.
As the season winds down, I hope you’ll come see it for yourself. Whether you join us for a Wellness Market Day, volunteer, attend a workshop, or simply take a walk through the farm, I hope you’ll spend some time at The Well before the season ends.
Upcoming opportunities are on our website’s Events page. Our final Wellness Market Day of the season (October 24) should be a special one, with a variety of activities and events, including the 5th Annual Green Scream, hosted with our longtime partners at The Green Scheme. Described as “an afternoon of Terrifyingly Family Fun,” the event will take place from 1–4 p.m. Spoiler alert: it’s not actually terrifying.
Thank you, as always, for being part of the DC Greens community. I hope to see you at The Well soon.
All the best,
