School Gardens

Our GROWING GARDEN TEACHERS series aims to equip garden educators with the technical skills, support and curriculum materials they need to run integrated garden science and nutrition education programs at their schools.

In collaboration with The Office of the State Superintendent of Education, Department of Wellness and Nutrition Services, we offer both a Fall and Spring two-day intensive workshop covering all aspects of a garden educator’s position, from technical garden skills and lesson planning, to managing classes and cooking with kids.

In addition, we manage a monthly professional development training series for school garden coordinators, which seeks to create a structured sharing of best practices and fosters a strong support network of teachers working in this field.

Spring Training Workshop

On March 23rd and 24th, 50 teachers from all Wards of the city joined us for our first ever Growing Garden Teachers workshop, held at the Farm at Walker Jones. This city-wide workshop was designed to offer technical training and curriculum support to teachers at public and Charter schools, while promoting information-sharing and initiating a professional network among D.C.’s school garden educators. Participants also took part in demonstration lessons led by Rebecca Lemos and Lola Bloom, of City Blossoms at their inspiring Marion Street Intergenerational Garden and by Anna Benfield at the ever-amazing 40 year old Washington Youth Garden.

It was an incredibly exciting event. It was also inspiring to listen to all the teachers sharing their knowledge and experiences with each other – clearly thrilled with the chance to be in contact and support each other’s work.
