Farm to School
Did you know there is a one-acre urban farm at a D.C. Public School? With beehives, a butterfly and native pollinator garden, an herb garden, a compost area, a rainwater collection system, and an acre of edible crops, The Farm at Walker Jones is an ideal resource for schoolchildren across the city to dive into environmental education and discover where food comes from.
Field Trips
DC Greens works collaboratively with The Farm at Walker Jones to coordinate field trips throughout the school year. Field trips run Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10-12. Trips include a tour and overview of the various elements of the farm, a beehive demonstration, small group hands-on farming activities and a food preparation activity. The students will learn about plant parts and life cycles, soil health, pests, beneficial insects and pollinators and the nutritional benefits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables!
If you are interested in bringing your class to visit The Farm, please fill out this form, or email sarah@dcgreens.org.
